Papers, Please. Dystopian puzzle full review

Welcome to the fictional bureaucratic world full of papers and documentation! The game action takes place in the 1980s right after the end of the War between fictional Arstotzka and Kolechia. You are going to live in the communist country Arstotzka and play a role of the checkpoint inspector. Your usual phrase would be "Papers, please!" as your primary goal is to inspect passports and associated travel papers. Surrender to your work completely and even enjoy your job behind the desk!

Graphics 4.5/5

Minimalistic pixel style is appropriate for the game's mood. You virtually transfer in the atmosphere of an anti-utopian state. All these square, pixel features, and clumsy fonts may seem to you a drawback, but soon you will understand their function. They are very accurate features of the imperial style. Again, the faces of visitors are chronically sullen, gloomy. A red-brown country where no one smiles, and every day there is a rusty rain. But the atmosphere is transferred to graphics as accurately as possible, so it is good.

Gameplay 5/5

As a newly appointed checkpoint inspector in the immigration office in the fictional country of Arstotzka, you will sit behind the desk and check the citizen's documents. Every name's spelling in the passport, all the stamps, and seals affixed, and so on. You've got to make sure that every person applying to you, is not a smuggler or a rule breaker.

Use a rulebook, fingerprints and body scanners to ensure that the person matches the description from the papers. Any mistake in your duties will lead to warnings from superiors or even monetary penalties.

Behind the documents, there are people with real-life stories. Some can be tragic; some are comical. There are also enough bizarre and fun stories. With the tactics that you choose about these people (to be kind or strict), you decide which kind of gameplay awaits for you and create the overall story.

Will you break the rules for people's good or stay bureaucratic to the core? It is your decision, which will lead to one of the twenty possible endings.

Controls 5/5

A mouse or a keyboard? Both controls are possible, but with touch controls, everything becomes more simplified than with a mouse cursor. Anyway, everything is easy to get used and come to intuitively.

Replay Value 5/5

As we already mentioned, there are about twenty possible outcomes of the game. And add to this dozens of people's stories and hundreds of documents! So replaying Papers, Please will always keep some novelty for you.

This game causes a strong emotional connection right from the beginning and preserves it until the end. This kind of game is not for simple entertaining, but also a reason to think about the possible consequences of a totalitarian system. Perhaps, we can call it a new game genre where the past reality of humanity is somehow connected with a fictional dystopia.
